While Lew Weiss, President of All Metals and Forge LLC, doesnt consider himself an Internet pioneer, his company was among the first to see the potential of the email newsletter as a customer relationship vehicle.

Most people in my industry tend to have a buy-sell view of the customer, says Weiss, My view is that I want to be more than just a supplier. I want to be a partner.

Weiss recognized early on that an email newsletter gave companies the chance to turn themselves into information resources, and that this would eventually increase sales. Today this concept is known as permission marketing and is widely practiced.

MetalsWatch, which provides news to readers in the steel industry, metals industry, and other heavy industries, has 28,000 readers. The email newsletter is prepared in conjunction with Tom Stundza, editor of Purchasing Magazine.

Weiss credits the MetalsWatch email newsletter with being a major factor in his companys steel and metal sales.

There was a time when we questioned the value of the email newsletter, and whether people were really reading it, says Weiss, So we gave it a rest for a bit, but were bombarded by requests about MetalsWatch.

Asked what advice he would give to young companies starting their own email newsletter, Weiss says, Dont expect to make money quickly. You have to be patient and give it time to grow.
